YouTube to MP3: Save Audio & Convert Locally
Want a YouTube MP3 file? Save available audio as M4A or WebM, then convert it to MP3 with FFmpeg on your computer. Follow the steps and bitrate guide.
Y2mate does not convert YouTube to MP3 in the browser. Save the original audio with the desktop helper, then use FFmpeg locally to create an MP3 file.
How to convert YouTube to MP3 on your computer
1. Open a public video you own or have permission to download. Install and start the Y2mate desktop helper, paste the video URL and check its formats.
2. Choose Original audio format and save the track. Look in Downloads/Y2mate for the resulting M4A, WebM or other source audio file. Keep the original if you may need to edit or convert it later.
3. Install FFmpeg from ffmpeg.org and make it available on PATH. Use the command below in a terminal, replacing input.m4a with the saved file's actual path. FFmpeg writes output.mp3 on your computer; conversion does not use this website's server.
Convert a saved audio file to MP3
ffmpeg -i "input.m4a" -vn -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k "output.mp3"Use your saved file's real path and extension. This command runs on your computer after downloading the audio.
YouTube audio download versus MP3 conversion
An audio download copies the available audio stream. MP3 conversion decodes that stream and encodes a new MP3 file. YouTube commonly supplies AAC in M4A or Opus in WebM, so an audio-only download is usually not an MP3.
Renaming a .m4a or .webm file to .mp3 does not convert it. If your device supports the original format, keeping it avoids a second lossy encoding and an extra conversion step.
128, 192 or 320 kbps: which MP3 bitrate?
128 kbps gives smaller files and can suit speech. 192 kbps is a useful starting point for general listening. 320 kbps produces larger files, but cannot restore detail absent from the downloaded source. A 320 kbps label is not proof of better original audio.
The example uses 192 kbps. Change 192k to 128k or 320k if needed. For a one-hour track, 192 kbps is roughly 86 MB before tags and overhead. Duration and bitrate both affect file size.
Can I convert YouTube to MP3 online without installing anything?
This site can expose an available direct audio link without installation, but it does not perform MP3 conversion in the browser. The local conversion method here needs the desktop helper for downloading and FFmpeg for conversion. Do not expect an MP3 download button in the website's results.
If you only want to listen offline and your player accepts M4A or WebM, download the original audio instead. For network-bound media, local parsing and saving may avoid the server-to-browser IP mismatch.
Troubleshooting audio conversion
If the terminal says ffmpeg is not recognized or command not found, finish installing it and check PATH. If it cannot find the input, quote the full filename, including spaces, and use the actual file extension. An existing output file may prompt for overwrite; choose a new filename to keep both files.
If the audio cannot be downloaded, resolve the source access problem first. Converting a file does not unlock a private or unavailable video. An exported MP3 also has no video track; use MP4 when you need picture and sound.
