YouTube Downloader for PC: Free Desktop Helper
Save YouTube video and original audio on your own computer. Free Y2mate desktop helper with local downloading and optional FFmpeg video merging.
Python 3.10+ is required. The Windows launcher installs yt-dlp in a local virtual environment. FFmpeg is optional for high-quality stream merging.
Download desktop helper (ZIP)Why use the desktop helper?
A source may bind media links to the network that requests them. Server-side parsing and a browser on a different network can therefore disagree. The desktop helper both parses and downloads on your computer, avoiding that server-to-user address mismatch. It does not make restricted content public or guarantee that every source accepts requests.
Install and start
Download and extract the ZIP below. Install Python 3.10 or later from python.org if needed. On Windows, run start-windows.bat; it creates a local virtual environment and installs the listed yt-dlp dependency from PyPI. It then opens a local browser interface. The Python source and launch script are included for inspection.
On macOS or Linux, create a virtual environment in the extracted folder, install requirements.txt with pip and run y2mate-desktop.py. See README.txt in the package for exact commands. Do not run the helper on a public server: it listens only on 127.0.0.1 and should stay that way.
Choose and save
Paste one public video link into the local interface. A combined-video option works without stream merging. Audio mode saves the source audio format, not a converted MP3. If FFmpeg is installed and on PATH, high-quality mode can combine separate streams locally. Files are saved to Downloads/Y2mate unless you choose another output folder using the command line.
Your network, files and access
The website provides the small tool package only; video and audio bytes travel from the source to your computer. The local helper uses a session token and does not accept website-origin API calls. Do not share its session link. It does not request account credentials, switch proxies or bypass source restrictions. Close the command window or press Ctrl+C to stop it.
